Blind Valley of Baume-les-Messieurs: Marvellous in So Many Ways
Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, the village of Baume-les-Messieurs has won many awards. It is located in the very heart of a blind valley, a typical geological feature of the Jura.
A Particularly Remarkable Blind Valley
For geologists, a blind valley is a long valley which penetrates a limestone plateau and ends abruptly, like the “end of the world”. Baume-les-Messieurs is one of the most beautiful blind valleys in the Jura thanks to its location and the richness of its formation. At the bottom of the blind valley, you can find the famous waterfalls of Baume-les-Messieurs. The waterfalls originate from the Dard River which springs forth after a turbulent passage through the very heart of the Baume-les-Messieurs caves.
An Extraordinary Natural Site
Located in a Natura 2000 area, plants and wildlife in the blind valley are protected. It’s common to see a peregrine falcon or a red kite in the skies above the village.
