The Best Place to Learn about the Poles
Scheduled to reopen in 2015/2016, the “new” Espace des Mondes Polaires will be the leading cultural centre in France dedicated to the poles and the expeditions conducted there. Intended to be both educational and fun, the centre is aimed at all ages and audiences, from experts to amateurs of polar exploration. Temporary and permanent exhibitions, books and films… You’ll find all of these knowledge sources on polar exploration right here in the heart of the Haut-Jura. An added extra … there’s an ice rink too!
Focus on a Famous Haut-Jura Native
The centre owes its name and its establishment in the Jura Mountains to the famous explorer Paul-Emile Victor who grew up here. Closely attached to his roots in the region, it was his wish to build the centre at Prémanon, a village in Les Rousses ski resort. The explorer went on many expeditions to the North pole. He famously lived for a whole year with an Eskimo family. While we await the opening of the polar centre, you can visit the association museum which takes us through the history and discovery of the polar scientific expeditions.
