A short walk from the village of Baume-les-MessieursChâteau-Chalon is an exceptional little Jura village that is not to be missed.

A Village with an Outstanding Heritage

Perched on an imposing cliff, the village of Château-Chalon stands guard over its age-old treasure: the Château-Chalon vineyards.

Designated a “Petite Cité Comtoise de Caractère“, it is a picturesque village with tall winegrower houses. Find your way through the streets to the Eglise Saint-Pierre, which dates back to the 12th century. Characterized by the mix of romanesque and early gothic styles, it houses many painted murals as well as ancient furnishings. In front of the church, you will find the “Froid Pignon”, an old country house classified as a “Monument Historique” (“Historical Monument”). Inside, you can take an interactive tour of the sloping hillsides of the Haute-Seille region and the Vin Jaune Country.

A Unique Winegrowing Area

Château-Chalon’s unique and prestigious grape variety from the Jura, the Savagnin, is protected under the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (Controlled Designation of Origin, a French certification for quality local products). A wine tasting session is the perfect time to discover the gastronomy of the Jura, whether it is local specialties, such as the Volaille de Bresse (a popular chicken dish), trout with Vin Jaune, crôute aux morilles (a simple, yet delicious combination of toasted bread and morel mushrooms in a cream sauce), or a simple tasting of Comté and Morbier cheeses with a glass of Jura wines.

Like the neighbouring Baume-les-Messieurs, Château-Chalon is classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France (Plus Beaux Villages de France).
