Nantua, the “Catholarde”
Nantua is a large, peaceful town at the edge of a deep-water lake. It is surrounded by spectacular limestone cliffs that invite you to take a stroll (where you may come across a chamois!). The timeless feel of Nantua never disappoints its visitors. History and gastronomy, relaxation and adventure… Nantua makes a lasting impression. The Abbey of Saint Michel stands today as a monument to Cluniac art. Legend has it that in the 7th century, Bishop Amand founded this monastery here by pardoning the four men who wanted to murder him. The Abbey also houses other gems such as a painting by Delacroix and an organ dating from 1845. Thanks to its exceptional acoustics, the Abbey holds unforgettable concerts each summer. This “Catholad” city turns into a resort during the summer and is a renowned gastronomical stop-over with its famous quenelles in sauce Nantua (a mixture of creamed fish or meat combined with breadcrumbs). Stroll around the lake, swim, sail, hop on a pedal boat… life certainly is beautiful in Nantua.
Oyonnax and Silicon Valley
In 1955, Roger Vailland set his novel “325,000 Francs” in Oyonnax, a small town in Bugey (in the Ain region), in the heart of an industrial development. The boxwood workshops have been replaced by factories from the plastics industry. Its products are now exported around the world.
At an altitude of 540 m and surrounded by mountains and fir trees, one would not expect Oyonnax to be so busy! Known as the French capital of plastic manufacturing, it is a leading site for technological research. This is a nice twist for the gateway to a famous tourist attraction: the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Jura, Jura’s most famous natural reserve. The Jura Mountains, combined with Lac Genin will make you feel like you are in an alluring far-away destination such as Canada. Imagine yourself escaping to nature by bicycle, mountain bike or simply on foot. Its contrasting technological field shows off its knowledge through design, machinery and the processing of plastic materials. 600 innovative companies continue to grow and pursue global development in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve.
